Digital detox during the school holidays: how outdoor play helps children take a break from screens

1 June is one of the loveliest days of the year for children. A celebration, smiles, more time outdoors, and for younger schoolchildren, the summer holidays have already begun.

After months of lessons, homework, early mornings and more and more time in front of screens, summer comes as a breath of fresh air. For many parents, however, the holidays also bring a familiar challenge: how to make sure their child does not spend most of their free days with a phone, tablet, television or games console.

The truth is that technology is part of our everyday lives. We do not need to ban it completely. But the school holidays are a good opportunity to help children build a healthier rhythm - with more movement, more outdoor play and more time away from constant digital stimulation.

The good news? The best kind of prevention is completely free, enjoyable and right outside the door.

Why is it important for children to take a break from screens?

Children today are growing up in an environment where Wi-Fi, phones, tablets, laptops and smart devices are all around them. This means not only more time in front of screens, but also more time near sources of electromagnetic fields.

A child’s body is still developing, and the nervous system is more sensitive to overload, not only from the devices themselves, but also from the constant flow of sound, light, movement, games, videos and messages.

Symptoms such as tiredness, headaches, difficulty falling asleep and lack of concentration are often put down to the “modern way of life”, but they can also be a sign of digital overload. Very often, the body simply needs a break. And summer offers a wonderful opportunity for that break to happen naturally.

Outdoor play is the easiest digital detox

When a child is outside, in the park, in the garden, in the forest, at the beach or on the playground, the screen naturally moves into the background.

This is one of the best things about outdoor play: we do not need to spend a long time persuading children. When there is movement, friends, a ball, a bicycle, sand, water or simply space to run, their attention shifts by itself.

And that is one of the easiest forms of digital detox.

The benefits of grounding and outdoor play

When we take children to the park, the forest or the beach, we are doing much more than simply “taking them for a walk”. We are giving them a natural way to reset.

  • Grounding and contact with nature: Walking barefoot on grass or sand allows the body to release built-up static electricity and excess tension. It helps the body relax and the mind step away from the mode of constant stimulation.
  • Movement instead of exposure: When a child is cycling, playing hide-and-seek or running around, the phone stays in the backpack or even better, at home. Time spent away from sources of EMF gives the body a chance to rest. Movement also helps children use up energy, become naturally tired and sleep better.
  • Natural dopamine: Outdoor play encourages the production of feel-good hormones in a natural way, unlike the “ready-made” dopamine hit that screens provide. Even a few hours a day without a phone or tablet can make a difference. It does not need to be a ban. It can simply be a rule: “When we are outside, the phone stays in the backpack.”

4 easy ideas for more outdoor time this summer

1. Nature treasure hunt

Make a short list on paper of things for your child to find: a smooth stone, a pine cone, something yellow, a clover, and a leaf with an interesting shape. This is a simple game that keeps their attention engaged without the need for a phone.

2. Family picnics without phones

Choose a park, garden or place outside the city and declare it a “phone-free zone”. Bring badminton rackets, a ball, a frisbee, playing cards or simply something tasty to eat.

Sometimes these ordinary moments become the best memories of the holidays.

3. An evening outside instead of an evening in front of a screen

After a warm summer day, you can go for a short walk, watch the sunset, play in the garden or sit on the balcony without the television or phones.

It is a small change, but over time it creates a new habit: the day does not always have to end with a screen.

4. Camping under the stars

Even if it is just in the garden, sleeping in a tent, away from the home Wi-Fi, is an adventure children will remember for a long time, while their bodies rest in an environment with lower levels of EMF.

Balance is more important than bans

We do not need to turn technology into the enemy. It is part of life, and children will use it. The question is how to help them understand that rest is not simply switching from one device to another.

The summer holidays are a good time to bring back more movement, more play and more real time together. And when we need to stay at home, surrounded by many devices, we can also think about creating a calmer electromagnetic environment in everyday life.

Use the summer to build new, healthier habits. And while you are outside, leave the devices aside so you can reset too.
